Holiday [Faux] Fur

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Urban Outfitters leopard faux fur coat, Topshop tulip black dress, Collette black clutch, BCBG patent black leather heels, Zara leopard necklace.

Happy New Year's Eve!! I'm really looking forward to having champagne cocktails with some amazing friends tonight. I've got a pretty sparkly dress and hopefully I will be able to convince Ollie to take a couple of photos before we head out.

The dress that I'm wearing in these photos is the one that I wore to Ollie's Christmas party a couple of weeks ago. I was thinking this was a good option if I didn't find anything for tonight, but I thought it wasn't quite sequiny enough so I'm glad I found something else.

I hope you have an amazing NYE! I have a very good feeling about 2013 :)

Leather Sleeves

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Zara camel coat with leather sleeves, Zara black wax coated denim, Zara leopard print boots, Botkier silver treated leather bag, Stella and Dot renegade cluster bracelet, True Worth Design bronze bead bracelet, J Crew blue and gold bangle, Olivia Solie Jewelry triangle necklace

After all of the Christmas activities, it's nice to have a bit of a break and take advantage of doing absolutely nothing. And this is exactly what I am doing today -- nothing. I had a huge sleep-in and am on my third cup of coffee. The perfect morning... Actually, at some point I do need to venture outside to hunt for the perfect NYE dress. We will be going to a nice dinner party, so some classy sparkles are in order. And since I've left it to the last minute, I can no longer buy it online (Eek!). Clearly, this is a pretty huge dilemma, so if anyone has any suggestions of a good spot for party dresses in Vancouver, please let me know!

Oh yes, about this look. Isn't this the best jacket ever? I am so in love with the faux leather sleeves. It looks like I am the master of layering, when in fact it's Zara who is the genius. I bought this before the boxing day sales because I knew it would be one of the first things to go and I know what those lines are like at Zara on boxing day. Total madness. I saw a photo on the morning of the 26th and was happy that I already had my pretty coat at home, safe and sound :)

Another on of my new favourites is this pretty necklace by Olivia Solie Jewelry. I love simple items like this that you can wear everyday. There is something so appealing about triangles and the best part is the little cross that is stamped into the bronze (you can just make it out in the close-up). I got some earrings in the same style and I love the little details like this. She sells her jewelry at XO Bella in Kits and online here

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! xoxox

Subtle Sequins

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Forever 21 faux leather jacket, Forever 21 Striped sequin top, Botkier Silver Bag, Zara Boyfriend Jeans, Topshop Western Boots

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Ollie and I spent it on Vancouver Island with my family and had an amazing relaxing couple of days. I wish we could have spent a little more time there to visit more friends and family, but I'm happy with whatever I can get.

This morning, we had a good sleep in and then made the rounds to do some last minute visits. I wanted to still be in the holiday spirit, so I opted for some sequins. I feel like these are quite subtle for sequins (if there is such a thing) and I toned them down with boyfriend jeans, a leather jacket and my new boots! Ollie got these for me and I'm so in love with them. These babies are definitely going to get a lot of use.

So now it's back to work and time to look forward to New Year's Eve! I still have to find something to wear...

One More Day!

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing XO Bella sweater, H&M burgundy jeans, Sportsgirl Sneaker Wedges, Urban Outfitters Beenie, Olivia Solie Necklaces. J Crew, Stella&Dot and True Worth Design bracelets

Christmas is so close, I can't believe how quickly it came! We realized that we hadn't taken nearly enough holiday photos, so yesterday Ollie and I went on a hunt to take some Christmas Tree photos and it was no easy task. It was raining a little too much for the ones outdoors and then we got asked to stop taking photos of this pretty one at Shaw Towers. Can you believe that? Why wouldn't they want us taking photos of their pretty tree? The security guard was a bit of a Scrooge I suppose. We did manage to sneak a few in and I'm happy we did!

I'm wearing my new necklaces from Olivia Solie Jewelry and I really wish that I got some close-ups of them. I've got a few in my next outfit post, so I'll show you some better shots then. Check out her site in the meantime, she's got the prettiest pieces!

What are your plans for the holidays? Wherever you are, I hope that you are having a wonderful time :)

Sparkles for New Year's Eve

NYE Dresses

Party dress / Mesh dress / Matthew Williamson sequin dress / Short dress / Topshop metallic cocktail dress / Alice + Olivia alice olivia dress / Mango print dress / AllSaints print dress / Diesel sequin dress

Like most people I know, I feel that New Year's Eve never really lives up to the hype. But this doesn't mean that I have given up on it completely. I would never turn my nose up at a day on which wearing a sparkly dress is practically mandatory! This year, we're going to do it classy: fancy restaurant, lots of food in multiple course, and champagne at midnight. For the occasion I am on the hunt for the perfect dress. In my mind, the perfect dress means sparkly and short, while remaining classy and cute. I think the options above are all absolutely perfect. Now I just have to choose one!

What are your plans for NYE? Will you be wearing a sparkly dress?

Christmas Sweaters

Christmas Sweaters

This year, I really want to have a fun Christmas sweater to wear on Christmas day. I imagine myself being so cozy by my parent's fireplace, drinking a big cup of coffee and eating my body weight in chocolates. It just wouldn't be the same without a fun cheesy sweater to complete the fantasy. It can't be at all tight because I plan on having a gigantic food baby, and it can't be expensive because it will most likely only be worn the once. But sometimes these purchases are so worth it :)

Which one is your favourite?

Coco & Yves

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing XO Bella Coco & Yves grey sweater, Zara black coated skinny jeans, Zara leopard print boots, Stella & Dot, True Worth Design and J Crew Bracelets

My favourite part about the holidays is definitely getting into the spirit of being a kid again. Decorating the house, putting gifts under the tree and decorating the Christmas cookies! I couldn't believe that I had never actually put together a gingerbread house before, but now I can see why my parents had never bought one for us -- it's surprisingly difficult... My brother bought a gingerbread train and, well, you will see the results... Close enough? I think so!

It was inevitable that we would be getting our hands dirty at their party (especially since mulled wine was involved) so I dressed in my new sweater from XO Bella. I knew it could withstand a little flour and sugar mishaps during our baking extravaganza. Plus, it's just so cute! This sweater is a part of XO Bella's new line and I can tell that I'm going to be completely addicted to this one. Especially at their amazing prices :)

Studded Cross

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing XO Bella gold studded cross sweater dress and Zara black suede ankle booties

I think we're getting much better at the indoor photos! This is totally necessary because it has been raining non-stop in Vancouver for about 3 months straight -- very difficult for a blogger. The key is just to have lots of light (obviously) but we needed way more than I had imagined. And then more brightening in photoshop too. I'm sure we'll have it perfected just as summer comes along :)

I really love this sweater dress. I'm not usually drawn to apparel with crosses, but I really loved the shiny gold studs and the shoulder cut-out on this one. I bought it in a size up so that it would be a looser fit, but I think it's meant to be worn a little tighter. I'm sure that it would look super cute either way.

Now Ollie and I are off to a Christmas cookie decorating party! xoxox

Botkier Bag

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing United Colours of Benetton, grey coat, Aritzia grey sweater, Botkier silver leather bag

This super casual look was perhaps not worthy of a blog post, but I really wanted to show you my gorgeous new Botkier bag! I love the silver leather and it is the perfect size that it fits the essentials, but not so big that you end up carrying your entire life around in it.

These photos were taken on Sunday, when Ollie and I were running around getting our Christmas tree and decorations. I'll make sure to show you that fun stuff later!

I hope you have an amazing Wednesday. xoxox

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Sugarlips Embedded Jewels Top, Forever 21 faux leather jacket, Zara brocade baroque skirt, Zara black ankle boots, Urban Outfitters spiked black leather bag, Stella & Dot Renegade Cluster Bracelet, True Worth Design bronze bead bracelet, and J Crew blue and gold bangle

I received this top from Sugarlips right before my birthday and I'm so in love with it! The jewels on the collar are so adorable -- they are much larger than the average embellishment on a collar and I love the uniqueness of it. I wanted to create a bit of a look that had a mix of sweet and tough at the same time. These are always my favourite sort of looks :)

And now for the important part: the winner of the Stella & Dot Giveaway! The winner is Kate from the blog O My Heart. Thank you so much to everyone for entering!

Oh, Seattle...

We didn't get the chance to take many photos during our trip to Seattle last weekend, but we did snap a couple in our room on the first night. I'm still in my travel/shopping outfit -- which means the most comfortable thing possible. I love this city and it has become a bit of a mini tradition for Ollie and I to spend my birthday weekend here. Such amazing shopping, food and company. What more could a girl want on her special day?

Reunited

I used to love this coat so much. Then, one day I brought it to the dry cleaner and they shrunk a good inch and a half off the sleeves. I've never been able to look at it the same way since, but now I'm realizing I may have been a little too hard on the poor thing. It's not my coat's fault that the dry cleaner didn't know what they were doing and really, the coat fits ok -- just not as perfect as before. Also, I have a new found love for it because I didn't realize that you could see the leopard print lining! How fun is that? I always knew it was there, but I thought it was hidden from the world. I love the new perspective these photos have brought to this old coat of mine :)

Oversized Sweater

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing XO Bella oversized grey maxi sweater, grey bodycon mini skirt from Urban Outfitters. Anne Klein black biker boots, H&M opal statement necklace, H&M black leather bag, Danier Black leather gloves, Versace sunglasses, and Kenneth Cole watch
This weekend flew by so quickly. I can't believe it's already Monday. I actually had those moments on both Saturday and Sunday, where you wake with a start because you think it's a work day and the alarm didn't go off. I hate that feeling, but there is nothing better than the moment that you realize that it's the weekend and you don't need to get up at all. In fact, you can sleep all day if you like. And this happened twice! Definitely a good weekend. I'm hoping the week goes just as quickly because next weekend is my birthday!!

I can finally check a grey oversized sweater off my list! This amazingly comfy and cozy sweater was another great score from Black Friday. And this is the last of it, but thankfully this year I kept myself under control and only bought a couple of things that I will actually love and wear repeatedly. I'm getting much better at sales -- I used to buy things just because they were a great deal, only to have them sit in my closet until I eventually gave them away. Now, I ask myself whether I would be willing to buy it at full price. If the answer is yes, then I gladly scoop it up at the sale price. If the answer is no, then I let it go :)

Paradise City

So, how was the Black Friday shopping?? The things that I had my eye on weren't on sale (of course) but I did manage to get a couple of things in town. I love that Vancouver got into the holiday spirit and decided to put on a Black Friday of its very own. I'm actually wearing 2 of the items today! One is this super fun Guns N' Roses tee and the other is this spiked bag. The bag was only $10! I just love sales so much :)

Since buying the top, I've had alternating Guns N' Roses songs stuck in my head. Luckily, I love this band so I don't mind one bit. It's actually kept a perma smile on my face and that's always a good thing. The most prominent has been Paradise City -- I always picture the scene in Can't Hardly Wait when the nerdy guy was loaded and singing it. Classic.

White Lace Black Leather

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Forever 21 black leather jacket, Club Monaco black maxi sweater, Aritzia white lace dress, Anne Klein black leather boots, True Worth Design crystal pendant necklace, and bead bracelets, Stella and Dot Renegade Cluster bracelet, Givenchy bangle, and MAC Diva lipstick

I hope all of my American friends are having an amazing Thanksgiving! I love American Thanksgiving because it means Black Friday! I can't wait for all of the sales. I've got my favourite items already picked out and my fingers crossed that they are marked down on this magical day. Thank God for online shopping :)

So, about this look. I have to be perfectly honest -- I'm not super in love with this one. It's one of those outfits that looks fantastic in front of the mirror, but not so great once you look at the photos later. Today's lesson is to always take a practice shot before leaving the house. But I had all of these photos, and I actually love the photos themselves, so I thought I would post a couple of them to get your opinions! What do you think?

This was a last minute -- we're running to get Thai for lunch because we're starving, but let's take a couple of photos on the way-- look. It's a super casual look and one of my favourite "throw-it-on-and-go" outfits that is pretty much fool-proof. Except that it's getting a bit too cold for this one, so I think I'll have to switch the jacket for a heavier coat. We got a couple of shots in before the rain started up once again, and luckily they looked alright!

Hope you have an amazing Tuesday! xoxo

Perfect Timing

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Topshop boxy tweed coat, black sweater dress, Urban Outfitters Toque Beenie, Zara black leather bag, Via Spiga black leather riding boots

I love when things work out with perfect timing. The weekend has been a super gloomy one in Vancouver (surprise, surprise), but we really lucked out yesterday when we went for a walk down to the water to take photos. The sky cleared just where the sun was setting and it was absolutely breathtaking. I love moments like this -- when you accidentally have the most perfect timing.

It has been super chilly, so I was completely bundled up for this one. This is more reminiscent of what I would wear if I knew that I would be spending some time outside, or walking to work in the morning. For photos, I have been tending to take off a layer or two so that the photos look better, but I was so cold yesterday that I just wanted to wear something that would keep me warm.

These boots are my saviours during the winter. I walk about 30 minutes to and from work everyday, so I need something comfortable that will keep me warm and dry. I bought these on sale last winter and they have been one of my best purchases ever. The leather has kept nice and stiff even through countless rainy days, so they don't slouch or crease in funny places. Always a nice thing :)

I hope you've had an amazing weekend! xoxo

Blending In

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Forever 21 pleather jacket, Zara forest green top, True Worth Design crystal pendant necklace, Urban Outfitters black bodycon skirt, H&M snakeskin envelope clutch, Zara black suede booties, Danier black leather gloves
Aren't crisp winter days the most beautiful thing? I love this time of year, when the leaves have almost all fallen off the trees and we are left with this almost haunted look in the forests. Ollie and I found this gorgeous path with a stone wall that was surrounded by a dense forest and gorgeous old homes. I love Victoria for this reason -- you never know what you'll find in the next street.

I wanted to wear some rich dark colours with the forest green top as the main character, but I'm afraid I've gone and blended into the scenery. I hope you don't mind -- I just couldn't pass up this gorgeous location!

Burgundy and Stripes

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing H&M burgundy hat, Forever 21 pleather jacket, Urban Outfitters chambray denim top, H&M blue and white striped top, H&M burgundy skinny jeans, Zara black leather bag, Sportsgirl brown sneakers wedges, True Worth Design, Tiffany, Pyrrha, and La Dama necklaces
Having family and friends on Vancouver Island means quite a bit of travelling back and forth on the ferry. It really is the most beautiful scenery throughout the crossing, but I find the trip to be quite lengthy and uncomfortable after having done it so many times. I always want to be as warm and comfortable as possible, but still stylish because I almost always run into someone that I know. There's almost nothing that I hate more than running into an old acquaintance and looking like I just rolled out of bed -- so embarrassing and has happened one too many times for me to ever let it happen again.

So, in order to keep warm and cozy, I pile on the layers. I was wearing 4 layers on this particular day (the 4th is under the striped top). The hat helps a lot with the warmth and comes in super handy as an eye mask for when you want to have a little snooze. The sneaker wedges are my new favourite travel shoes because they keep my feet warm and are so comfortable for all of the walking. It's really the same formula that I use whenever flying as well :)

So now it's back to work after a relaxing long weekend. This is always the hardest part, but at least we know it's only a four day week ahead (at least in Canada -- sorry rest of the world). I hope you enjoy your Tuesday! xoxo

Preppy Style

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing teal blue sweater, striped blue Zara button-up, Bluejuice vegan leather skirt, Zara leopard print boots, Zara black leather bag, tiffany, pyrrha and La Dama necklaces
This might seem funny to some, but this preppy style is so out of the norm for me. All day, I felt like people were looking at me funny because of the way I was dressed -- as if I was wearing the craziest thing imaginable. To be honest, I actually got quite a few compliments on this look so this is why I decided to photograph it and now that I look at the photos, it's really a very regular outfit. Isn't it so funny the way we build these sorts of things up in our heads? I learned 2 things from this look: preppy is not my thing and fashion risks mean very different things to different people.

The things that I do really love about this outfit are the leather skirt and the leopard print boots. I could wear these 2 items every single day! This bag I do use pretty much everyday, so it's a keeper as well. And teal is my very favorite colour, so anything in this hue makes me feel happy all day.

I hope you like my "preppy look" and we should all respect the people that do dress in this style because the sweater over the button-up might just be the most uncomfortable look there is (I was adjusting and rearranging that sweater all day!)

Leopard and Burgundy

I love when weeks just zoom by. I really feel like this week is so much shorter than most and it is hugely appreciated. Last night, we celebrated my amazing friend Tarryl's birthday (from True Worth Design) and it is always such a nice treat whenever I get to see her. Also, I got the best news because I think she's moving back to Vancouver! Can't get much better than that.

Ollie and I have been spending most evenings indoors to avoid the rain, but went out on Tuesday to watch Looper -- such a good movie!  I decided to wear my new leopard print boots with my burgundy jeans so that I could be nice and comfy for sitting in the theatre. Such an easy outfit, but the boots instantly make everything so much more fun! I swear they go with pretty much everything and are so comfortable. I hope you like them because you'll be seeing a lot more of them :)

Plaid and Coated Denim

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Aritzia red plaid flannel top, Zara wax coated denim pants, Zara spiked leather heels, Tiffany, La Dama and Pyrrha Necklaces, True Worth design and Givenchy Bracelets. Michael Kors Bag, and Kenneth Cole Watch
If yesterday was my Parisian look, I suppose today is all-out Canadian. Might as well represent my true national pride, right? I grew up in a logging town, so I think this plaid flannel top is more than fitting. I really hadn't planned my posts this way but the second that I was uploading the photos, I realized that I had a little theme going. I wonder what nationality I should do tomorrow...

I bought this top from Aritzia a couple of years ago and it's one of my favourite items. I feel slightly nostalgic whenever I put it on because I was wearing it in my very favourite photo of Ollie and I. It always reminds me of this and puts a smile on my face :)

I hope your week is off to a good start! I'm pretty sure this extra hour of sleep really has no effect once Monday hits, but it's nice to have that little bit of extra sun in the morning. Have a happy Tuesday!

Sweet November Rain

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing H&M burgundy hat, H&M Striped Knit Sweater, Urban Outfitters black bodycon mini skirt, Zara black booties, Zara black leather bag with chain straps, Tiffany heart necklace, Michael Kors mens watch, True Worth Design bead bracelets, Givenchy cuff bracelet
I feel so Parisian in this look. I'm sure it's my clumsy Canadian version and is far from the real thing, but something about the simplicity of the look -- the stripes with the black -- makes me feel this way. I can picture myself walking down the street and looking into all the pretty little shops and cafes while eating my macarons, but the reality is that I'm hiding under an overhang to keep out of the rain... the sweet November rain...

And considering the reality of my location, I think this burgundy hat might be my best new purchase. It has already saved me from the rain twice and I only bought it yesterday. First, I had to stop and get groceries on the way home from H&M and it was pouring out. I wouldn't have had enough hands for an umbrella, so I took the hat out of the shopping bag and used that instead. The second time was today during photos. My hair frizzes up the second I walk out the door into the rain, so this hat allowed a second set of photos in one day (quite the necessity now that we've changed the clocks back). So really, hats are like hands-free umbrellas! How had I not discovered this earlier?

I hope you've had an amazing weekend and enjoy that extra hour of sleep! I know I will :)

October Looks

October was a very strange month weather-wise. Looking at these photos, I realize how drastically it has changed. We started out with summer temperatures and non-stop sunshine, then suddenly it switched to winter temperatures with non-stop rain. Mother Nature, you are such a tease... but I can't complain -- it was such a treat to have summer in October (even if just for the first week).

I hope you like my looks from October. Which one is your favourite? I would love to hear your opinions!!

Fall Denim

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Forever 21 vegan leather jacket, American Apparel dress worn as top, Urban Outfitters chambray denim top, Zara boyfriend jeans, H&M black leather bag, Zara burgundy heels, True Worth Design Bracelets, Kenneth Cole watch

I am so happy that boyfriend jeans are sticking around for another season. I definitely wasn't ready to give these babies up. They are just way too comfy! And one of my favourite looks is to wear casual BF jeans with a cute pair of heels. It's a way to be super casual but the heels dress it up just enough. One of my favourite bloggers is Christine of Fash 'n Chips -- she's the queen of this look.

So for the "cute heels" element of the look, I decided to wear these burgundy beauties from Zara. They have somehow turned into my work shoes, but they really do deserve so much more. They have the perfect height of heel for everyday wear and are the most gorgeous colour. I feel so bad that I make them work all day with me in my boring corporate clothes. Maybe I'll keep them home with me for a little while and give them some adventures :)

Baroque Skirt

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, Wearing Aritzia boyfriend blazer, American Apparel Dress worn as top, Zara baroqu print skirt in hunter green, Zara black booties, Zara black bag, True worth design crystal pendant necklace and bracelets, Givenchy bracelet

This skirt really reminds me of a beautiful and heavy set of curtains -- in a good way of course! This is the same skirt that I wore on my 100th post (here) and I think it has such a different personality when we aren't playing around in the golden fields. This look almost feels school-girl like to me and maybe even a little preppy. I suppose this blazer has the tendency to have that effect with most outfits, considering the carved gold buttons and the striped lining that shows when the sleeves are rolled. I actually bought this blazer from Aritzia a few years ago and they still carry it in there. I guess it's one of those items that has stayed in style :)

Looking at these photos is really reminding me that my tan has fast become old news. I miss that thing! I refuse to go to the tanning salon, so I will be gradually getting more and more ghostly as the months go (yes, I do become more pale that this!). This eliminates a whole colour palette from my wardrobe, but luckily black will always be my friend and tights will hide my pale legs!

Boxy Tweed Coat

Isn't it so nice to take a random day off of work? Just knowing that everyone else is doing the same old routine, but you have the freedom to do whatever you like. This is exactly what I did on Thursday and it was wonderful! I had a little sleep-in, worked on the blog, went to meet Ollie for lunch and ran a few errands. Nothing extra-ordinary, but it was exactly the recharge that I needed.

These photos were taken during our lunch, at the top of Stanley Park. We only had about 5 minutes to get these in, but I really wanted to show you my new coat from Topshop! I was looking for something that was nice and over-sized, with a bit of colour that could go with pretty much anything. I found this one and have been wearing it pretty much every day since. It is so comfy and I love the boxy shape of it. Maybe not the most figure flattering of all shapes, but boxy tops always make the legs look much leaner, and who wouldn't want that? Plus, I'm super obsessed with menswear inspired pieces right now and thought this would be a simple way to incorporate it into my wardrobe.

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! xoxox

Burgundy Lips

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing MAC Diva burgundy lipstick, American Apparel Lace Nylon Dress worn as a top, Bluejuice vegan leather skirt from Seduce, Metal plate necklace from Seduce, Zara spiked heels, Colette black clutch and Givenchy Bracelet

I keep seeing burgundy lips posted all over the internet and am really loving the look. I've had MAC Diva sitting in my kit for ages and haven't brought it out because of a rude remark. One day, while at work, a random man came up to my till, had one look at me and told me he thought my lipstick was ugly. I was wearing "Diva" and have never worn it since. But I got to thinking... he really wasn't the happiest of men and I'm sure he was the sort that doesn't like any makeup on his women, so I probably wouldn't have won him over with anything that I had decided to wear on that particular day. Isn't it funny how a rude comment from one random person can stick with you for so long? I'm sure these people don't give a second thought to it and we shouldn't either. (Plus, they usually don't know what they are talking about.. or are slightly crazy -- I mean who says stuff like that to total strangers?)

So, I decided to give "Diva" another go and am so happy that I did! I love the way that it gives a whole new dimension to this look -- so much more glamorous with a bit of burgundy lippy. I kept it quite subtle by using a brush and layering it on very lightly. You can keep adding layers until you get your desired effect, but this way you get a much more even appearance. There's nothing worse that awkwardly caked on dark lipstick... (has the tendency to make one look slightly insane)

We've been playing around with shooting indoors and clearly are far from perfecting it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid a huge shadow? I suppose we have another 8 months to figure it out, but any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Instagram Love

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson

Ollie has been working like a crazy man (meaning no new photos), so I thought I would take this opportunity to do a little Instagram recap. If you aren't already aware, I am a complete Instagram addict. I get upset when I no longer have a new feed of images and am constantly on the hunt for new and fun accounts to follow. So please, let me know your user names so that I can find you on there!

My user name is STYLINGMYLIFE and I would love for you to follow me :)

I hope you have an amazing Wednesday and I will have another outfit post asap. xoxox

Chambray and Leather

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Forever 21 black vegan leather jacket, chambray Urban Outfitters button-up top, Urban Outfitters black bodycon skirt, Anne Klein black moto boots, black leather Zara bag, Seduce neckalce and skull bead bracelets

I really can't get enough of these fall settings. I was completely dreading fall because along with the change in season come the rain and the cold and the rain and the rain. But now, suddenly I remember how gorgeous fall can really be. Just look at all of these beautiful leaves!

But honestly, the rain really does come along with fall. We had pretty much the worst weather luck possible yesterday. It was a beautiful sunny morning, so we decided to check out the new Topshop/Topman yesterday (which, by the way, is absolutely fantastic) and then take some photos. It started raining the second that we got to the park and got worse and worse so that we gave up and the second that we started driving away, the rain completely stopped... Same thing happened at night, but with a cab situation rather than photos and I swear it was one big cruel joke. If I was God or Mother Nature (or whoever decides the weather...) I think I would mess with people like that too. Some good Saturday night entertainment :)

Luckily, you really can't tell that it was raining in these photos. And the good thing about taking photos under all of these trees is that it provides some decent shelter from the rain. I could have used a pair of tights to keep me a bit warmer,  but I think the look works much better without them (and tights are just so uncomfortable.)

I hope you had an amazing weekend!! xoxox

Colours of Fall

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchisnon, wearing Urban Outfitters tan pleather jacket, Guess by Marciano Black cowl neck sweater, Paige Premium Denim dark wash jeans, Urban Outfitters black suede booties, Michael Kors bag, Tiffany and Pyrrha necklaces. Photos taken in Stanley Park

Sometimes I just need a little reminder of how beautiful Vancouver is and I fall in love all over again. Ollie has been suggesting that we take photos in Stanley park for, like, ever and I finally thought "hey, why not?" I'm such a Scrooge when it comes to anything that involves inconvenient parking, busy traffic, or (worst of all) pay parking; so I've been avoiding this little slice of paradise for years. Now I can see how foolish I've been. And what's a $2 parking fee really going to hurt? Actually, I'm still resentful about that -- I seriously hate paying for parking in public parks...

But let's focus on the amazing colours! Isn't fall such a beautiful time of year? I love all of the leaves on the ground. I was so tempted to run and play in the leaves, but I wasn't allowed to move because It was too dark and I would have been blurry in the photos... So, I'm waiting patiently until the weekend so that we can go back and I can get my fill of kicking and tossing those leaves around to my heart's content. I can't wait!

It feels like ages since I've worn jeans and to be perfectly honest, I remember them keeping me a lot warmer. I think I'm liking tights and skirts a little more right now because I was absolutely freezing while taking these photos. Plus, skirts are just so cute! I might change my mind once it gets really cold out, but for now I'm a skirt girl. (unless it's boyfriend jeans -- I love those things!!)

Signed By Scarlett

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Sugarlips Signed by Scarlet red and black dress, Zara wide-brimmed black hat, Forever 21 black pleather jacket, Seduce metal collar neckace, Zara high heel black ankle boots, Colette Black Clutch

We've had some trial and error, but I think we have finally figured out a way to get some photos in the rain! I'm pretty sure this was the ultimate test because it was pouring on Sunday. We found a great spot by the water that is covered over but open enough that it still lets in tons of light. It turns out that everyone else knows of this spot as well because there were a bunch of people camped out under the overhang, hoping that the rain would pass. It didn't, so they hung out and watched as we took the photos :)

So, the tights have come out... I've been dreading this unavoidable day, but luckily they go so well with this pretty red and black dress that I don't even mind! This item is a new gift from the wonderful people at Sugarlips and I'm so in love with it. It's hard to tell in photos, but it's a gorgeous textured fabric that is a bit thicker than your average material. It's going to be so perfect for the upcoming holiday season -- the perfect colour for it too! I was very tempted to twirl in this full skirt (it really would be perfect for it) but last time I attempted this, Ollie got a camera full of shots in rapid succession of me mooning him! I wasn't willing to risk it this time, seeing as there were so many couples and small children around. Could have gotten a little awkward...

And yes, I realized that I haven't really taken this hat off since I bought it, but it's just the most perfect thing for this weather. It keeps my head warm, dry, and unfrizzed. And it looks great with everything! I think I might need to get another style so that you don't get too sick of it :)

A Day At The Races

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Zara Black wide-brimmed hat, RW & Co navy blue trench coat, Zara pink knit sweater, Urban Outfitters black bodycon skirt, Zara black suede booties, Zara black tights, Essie 5th Avenue red nailpolish at Hastings Racetrack
What do you do on a dark and dreary Saturday? Go to the races! My brother and his girlfriend had the brilliant idea of getting a box at the horse races on Saturday and it was so much fun. We spent the day eating greasy food, drinking wine out of plastic cups and cheering the horses on. I think we came out $15 on top and it was fantastic! I can't claim to be the most knowledgeable or talented better, seeing as I always go for the prettiest horse, or the one wearing pink... but it seems that you can always rely on the name.Turns out the cutest name almost always wins :)

I hope you had an amazing weekend! xoxo

Black Maxi

Vancouver Fashion Blogger, Alison Hutchinson, wearing Zara black hat, maxi skirt, nude knit, black suede booties, black and red woven necklace; H&M black leather bag, True Worth Design and XO Bella skull bead bracelets, and Givenchy Bracelet

Now, this is the fall we know in Vancouver -- rain and lots of it. It's such a shock to the system after all that beautiful sunshine, but like true Vancouverites, we will get used to it in no time. The only problem is that now we're not sure how to shoot my looks while it's raining and dark. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would love to hear them!

We took these photos on Thursday when it had clouded over, but the rain hadn't quite started yet. I have since discovered that this hat is so perfect for the rain because it stops my hair from getting all frizzy (if I decide to straighten it -- unlike these photos...) at the same time that it blocks the rain. I love it! And the skirt is just about the comfiest thing in the world. I wore it to work and felt like I was wearing PJs all day. You can't get much comfier than that :)
