Sienna

On our last full day in Tuscany, we decided to check out the town that everyone said was a "must see".
No matter who I had spoken to before leaving on this trip -- without a doubt everyone had Sienna at the top of their list. You can see why it is so loved the moment you get there -- I think our very first sight was walking into a courtyard with one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever seen. I love that moment of stumbling on something you hadn't expected and being greeted by the most stunning building out of nowhere. It really takes your breath away and sets the tone for the rest of the city.

It was an adorable town, perched up so high on a hill that there were actually escalators to reach the town itself -- definitely something I've never seen before! There were tons of little tourist shops, delis and cafes with delicious treats throughout all the narrow streets and the main square of the city has restaurants completely surrounding it, which was the perfect place to have lunch and a glass of wine while we people watched. This was also the first place that I tried limoncello and OMG is that stuff GOOD! Potent but good. I've got a bit of a soft spot for anything lemon, so this is pretty much the be-all end-all for me.

We had been having such beautiful weather in Tuscany, so on this day I decided to go with shorts and some comfy boots because I knew we were going to be doing a ton of walking. Turns out that it was quite chilly and with the narrow lanes and tall buildings, no sun really came into the cities at all (other than in the main square). Even with my extra layers on top, I was a bit cold, so I would recommend layering up in these old towns just to be on the safe side. Once we were out in the open air with the sun on us, I was able to take of my denim jacket and be comfortable, but within the city I definitely could have used long pants. Just something to keep in mind when you're sightseeing! We did climb up to the top of the watchtower in Sienna to take in the amazing views, so that did the trick of warming me up as well. If all else fails -- just get the heart rate up and you'll be warm in no time!

I was wearing:

Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren Jacket
Zara Shorts

Thanks so much for visiting!

  1. Lovely photos! This is making me so excited for my Italy trip in two weeks, even though we are skipping Tuscany...this time. Next time? House rental!! Good to know about the layering situation - I am not going to bank on it being hot at the end of May! Love the look!

  4. I don't think I have ever been there, despite being in Tuscany quite often in my youth. Maybe I should go back there and enjoy this city and some gelato.
