We did it! We finally got out to see some of the sights in Chiang Mai. It only took us 2 weeks, but we made it.It was actually super easy as well -- we caught a songthaew for 60 baht to the market, which is only like $2 CAD and made us realize we were ripped off in the past when we were catching them outside of our hotel. We were dropped off at the end of the market and right outside of the entrance was this absolutely stunning temple (Wat Phra Singh) that we couldn't resist checking out. We were worried we wouldn't be allowed in because we were wearing shorts, but no-one seemed to mind and there were plenty of other tourists wearing shorts and sleeveless tops. The problem must occur when you want to actually enter a temple, but we were just walking around the exterior of them so I suppose that's alright.
The entrance to the temples was beautiful, but then you walk around to the middle of the complex and see GOLD. So. Much. Gold. Entire structures and carvings out of the most beautiful shiny gold. I've seen it in photos before, but never expected it to be quite so brilliant in person.
We hit this sight right at the perfect time of day, as the sun was going down and giving us a bit of a double golden hour. The reflections of the sun mixed with the pastel skies was something else. I know that people can easily get templed out in this city, but this is our first one so we're still at the point of awe.
There's so much happening in each structure that you almost miss the detail in it. It wasn't until Ollie shot this photo that I saw all these different characters carved into the side. I think I was being distracted by all the shiny gold!
After the sun went down and my stomach couldn't stand it anymore, we ventured into the market. This thing is LONG. There are a lot of the same things being sold over and over but you can seriously get some incredible deals in there. It gets BUSY, but when we got there at around 5 (before checking out the temples), it was actually pretty quiet. I think it got super busy around 7 or so. We got one gift while there and tried a bunch of different food (lots of veggie choices this time!) and really had an amazing night. Next time, I think I'm going to pick up some of the adorable shorts and dresses they have in there for under $5 each, as well as get a 1/2 hour massage for $3. This was our first time, so it was more to check things out so next time we'll know what to look for. I heard some people haggling on the prices -- something which I have yet to try -- so I assume you can get these items for even cheaper. I really wonder if it's even worth the effort, but apparently they expect it so it must be done!
