HOW TO WEAR a Sheer Bodysuit 5 Ways

I've always had a rule -- I can only buy a new piece of clothing if I can think of 5 ways to wear it. I'm definitely no stranger to re-wearing a look that I love, but it's always nice to have multiple options to keep things fresh. Of course, this rule doesn't apply to dresses as they are pretty much one piece outfits, but with everything else, the rule sticks.

The importance to this rule really drove home over the last year while I was living out of one suitcase for 11 months straight. Items feel stale pretty damn quick if they aren't versatile and sometimes you need to get creative. I don't mean to brag or anything but I feel like I've pretty much mastered this now and since we're about to leave on another 10 month trip, it's top of mind as I plan what I'm going to be taking with me.

And so, with this in mind, I've had a light bulb go off and thought what better way to share this with you than a new series! I'm calling it "HOW TO WEAR" and I'll feature a different item each time that is either a trend that can seem intimidating or a basic item that we may sometimes overlook for styling up new outfits.

This week, I'm featuring the sheer bodysuit (a sheer top would work in the same way) which is really on trend at the moment. This item can seem pretty crazy to some people but you may not have thought of a few uses that really aren't that revealing at all. Have a scroll down to see 5 different ways you can easily style one of these tops. I hope you get some inspiration!

1. AS A TOP WITH A HIGH-WAIST SKIRT

This one might be the most obvious, but it is probably also the scariest. I mean, it is completely SHEER. You aren't hiding much when you wear it this way but if you are daring enough to go for it, there are definitely tricks to make this as flattering as possible.

The first thing to think about is what you will wear underneath. On the runway, this look would be worn sans bra but for the rest of us in the real world, that may not be the best option. When going for such a revealing outfit, I would suggest opting for a bralette or crop top that is cut straight across (like a bandeau) and avoid anything that will push the ladies up. This look can quickly go from sexy to trashy and trust me, this one is hot enough without going over the top.

The next thing to consider is what skirt to wear with it. In my opinion, as long as it's high-waisted, it's good to go. I've personally been loving the leather miniskirt trend at the moment so I thought I would incorporate this, but some other beautiful options could be a pleated midi skirt, a faded black denim skirt, or a suede button-down skirt.

To finish the look, I went for heeled ankle boots, which I feel work perfectly. They make your legs look a mile long while slightly dressing the look down and giving it more of an effortless cool-girl vibe. Another option could be a pair of chunky combat style boots -- they would especially look cute if you went with a denim skirt.

2. LAYERED UNDER A DRESS

This one is a bit of a double whammy because I wanted to show you two different options for layering a sheer top under a dress. You can either dress it up or down, but the idea is the same.

I'm not sure about where you are in the world, but on the West Coast of Canada you have approximately 3 days to wear those cute dresses that are meant for fall but don't cover enough to actually keep you warm for it. I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets lured into these cute styles only to regret it once I realize how impractical they are... until now, of course!

This pairing is actually the reason I bought this bodysuit in the first place and I'm so happy I did. It does the job of keeping you warm by acting as a second layer and since it's sheer, it doesn't compete with the dress.

The styling of this one is simple -- if you have a sleeveless or low-cut dress that you are having a hard time styling for fall, just throw the sheer top/bodysuit on underneath! I've worn it with a slip dress, which is super on trend for fall once again, but is made out of material clearly meant for the height of summer, as well as with a faux suede shift dress that is giving me all the fall vibes without the fall temps in mind. Just have a look through your closet and I guarantee you'll find something there that will work!

3. AS EXTRA COVERAGE UNDER A CROP TOP

Crop tops can be terrifying for anyone that isn't 100% comfortable with their stomach, but you can't deny that they're EVERYWHERE at the moment. It's almost impossible to find a top that isn't cropped at the moment, so rather than fight the trend, let's find a way to work with it!

I kept my look super casual for this one with low-slung boyfriend jeans and a cropped knit, but imagine it with high-waist jeans or shorts and a cropped tee and it would work just as well. You truly don't even need the sheer bodysuit to be on show, it can simply be a bit of a safety net for if you move the wrong way and expose your stomach. Wearing a solid top under a cropped one can look a little strange and counterproductive, but a sheer style works perfectly.

4. LAYERED UNDER A CAMISOLE

The camisole is an item that stays on trend season after season, year after year. The most obvious way to wear it for fall is to wear it under a blazer or cardigan, but why not put your beautiful top on show and instead layer it overtop of something. Last spring was all about the t-shirt under the camisole, but the perfect way to update it for fall is to layer it over something sheer. I personally love this look and have been a serial repeat offender with this one.

I've styled this look for day with some flat ankle boots, but imagine if I switched them out for a pair of heels, a black belt and a leather jacket -- the perfect outfit for drinks with the girls.

My styling tips for this one are to accentuate your waist by tucking in your top, and making sure that the sheer top is cut high at the neck. This works better to balance out the low-cut neckline of a silky camisole. Bonus points if your camisole has a lace detail -- I sure wish mine did!

5. WORN WITH MOM JEANS

I wanted to throw in one more option for wearing the sheer bodysuit as a top that is perhaps a bit less intimidating than the first. While the first option is all about the sex-appeal, this one is far more laid-back and casual. I personally love a good juxtaposition when it comes to style and what two items could be more opposite that a sexy sheer top and man-repelling mom jeans? Even with all of this sheerness on display, this look is far more hipster (is hipster still a thing?) than sexy.

The trick to this look is first and foremost the mom jeans. Make sure they are high-waisted and not too tight around the hips and thighs. If you go too tight, you are venturing into sexy with a body-conscious, figure hugging silhouette. Of course there's nothing wrong with this, but in order to keep it cool and casual, you need more volume.

The next thing to consider is what to wear over top (keeping in mind the bra suggestions from #1). I went with a leather jacket because I live in mine while the weather permits, but I think an even better option for this season would be a menswear inspired long-line blazer or an oversized knit cardigan. Whatever you choose, just make sure that your sheer top is still on display  so that you get the full effect.

To finish off the look, find a pair of flats that you love the best and throw them on. I went with a pair of easy black sneakers, but you can't go wrong with a pair of converse, ankle boots, loafers or slides. The options are endless!
