Gold Coast | Roadtripping Australia

 My old home!!

I lived on the Gold Coast for a year when I was 21 and loved every second of it. It was the first time I had ever seen anywhere tropical in real life and ever since then, I've been hooked. As you can tell, beautiful beaches are now an obsession of mine and I am forever on the hunt for my perfect one (which is most of them IMO).

A LOT has changed since I lived here and the city has grown so much. One of the amazing things about this is all of the beautiful paths and beach side amenities they've added. It really is so beautiful and well looked after. The downside is that it really feels like a big city now and has become a lot busier and crowded. When I lived here, I was based in Burleigh Heads, which was just a sleepy little beach bum town, but it has now become a real hot spot on the Gold Coast. I understand why because it really is one of the most beautiful places in Australia. Too bad everyone else has now figured that out!

Even busier than Burleigh Heads was Surfers Paradise (from the photo above) and I think it was extra busy when we were there because it was schoolies week. I would probably recommend not going during schoolies if you can avoid it but we didn't really have much of a choice. It really wasn't the end of the world -- I just think it would be better seen at another time.

While the main part of Surfers was pretty crowded, you only need to walk up the path a little ways before you have the entire thing to yourself. That's the incredible thing about the Gold Coast -- the beach goes on FOREVER. There's 70 km of it!

We spent 3 nights on the Gold Coast and saved a little money on this part by staying with Ollie's aunt and uncle. It's great having family in different parts of the country -- especially when they're such great cooks! I wish I could recommend somewhere to stay but for the location, definitely go with Burleigh Heads. There's tons of cafes, restaurants and little boutique shops as well as that STUNNING beach. You won't be disappointed!
