Getting sick when you're away from home is never a fun thing. I suppose I expected to get food poisoning while in Thailand, but at the same time, I didn't really see it coming.
I eat a vegan diet as best as I can while I'm here, but I don't think that food safety is really high on anyone's list. We had done pretty well for a month, but after a dinner of nothing more than veggie spring rolls and plain rice, I got so incredibly sick that I didn't leave my bed (or the bathroom floor) for about 3 days and am finally just starting to get back to myself after a week. It's times like this that I'm so grateful to have splurged on a nice clean apartment to feel comfortable in while recuperating. Also, super grateful for Ollie who fell off his bike the next day and even with his poor scratched up body, still took such great care of me.
I'm not really sure what to suggest for avoiding food poisoning while in Thailand. I mean, you could eat at the fancier restaurants that cater more to tourists, but even still, I have a feeling that there aren't any real regulations on food preparation or storage here. I admit, we do eat more often than not at the little hole-in-the wall places or even street food stalls, but it's just so cheap and good! Now that I'm back to eating regular food, I'm being a little more cautious than I was before and have so far had Subway (can't go wrong with a veggie sub!) and a meal from the vegan food stall at the Maya Mall, which is our fave. I assume my food poisoning came from cross-contamination of meat with my spring rolls, which then weren't cooked enough to kill any bacteria, so if I can avoid places that serve meat for the next bit, I might become more trusting again.
So after being cooped up inside for a week, I finally ventured out yesterday to get some groceries and dinner at Maya Mall. We came up to the rooftop to take in the sunset before heading out and were treated to the most gorgeous sight. I felt like a whole new person and I've realized that the temperature is now becoming nice and cool at night. I think the colder season is finally kicking in and I, for one, and very happy about it! The days are still hot as, but the nights are beautiful and I'm assuming the mornings probably are as well. Maybe it's about time I turn into a morning person to take advantage. I think that's what most people do here and I'm starting to realize why.
