I saw a friend write earlier that her favorite country is wine country and I would have to agree. There's something about vineyards that are so peaceful and inviting -- I could happily stay amongst them forever.
Ollie and I spent the last week in the Hunter Valley of Australia, which is the oldest wine region in the country. The rolling hills and endless green fields were something that is so unique to the country. I usually imagine white sandy beaches and great surfing breaks when I think of Australia but there is so much more to be seen in this beautiful place.
Ollie's brother and sister-in-law had recently visited the area and kept telling us it is a place we must see while we're here. It was always at the back of our minds, but we are more drawn to a beach holiday when the weather is warm. It turns out that the cooler temps at the moment were a blessing in disguise because it was the perfect thing to get us inland to check it out.
It is definitely off-season at the moment because the entire area was silent. At one time in my life, I think that would have bothered me, but this time it was actually quite nice. We've been spending so much time in overpopulated cities and staying with family, so it was nice to feel like the only people on earth for a few days. It was pretty amazing to not have to deal with traffic, crowds or lines to get into restaurants. I'm not sure what it is like during the summer, but I imagine it must get quite busy. I would still love to visit during the spring or summer to see the vines come to life, but I love the eerie feeling of an entire region that is empty.
We stayed at a beautiful hotel called Estate Tuscany that overlooked to vineyards in one direction and an orchard in the other. Our room was facing the orchards and I couldn't imagine a more beautiful scene to wake up to every morning (check out my instagram to see some shots from there). I miss having my coffee out on the terrace and watching the birds go about their morning. I could have easily done nothing other than that and been completely happy. These photos were actually taken across the street in what would be the vineyard view that the other rooms at the hotel would see. Not bad at all.
Even though it isn't far from Sydney, the weather felt noticeable warmer. We didn't get much sunshine at all, but I was still able to comfortably wear shorts and skirts throughout the week. I would throw on a coat at night, but it was nice to have my legs out again. I'm not sure if this is typical of the area or if we just lucked out, but it was nice to get away from the chill of the city. I had been getting a little down from the colder weather, but I think this trip has pepped me up for another week or so. I'm still getting quite envious of the warmer weather in the Northern Hemisphere, so as long as I can still dress like it's spring, I'll be content :)
