Byron Bay | Roadtripping Australia

If you follow me on Instagram then you know how obsessed I am with Byron Bay. We actually loved it so much that we stopped in again on our way back down the coast!

I hadn't been to Byron in about 15 years and from what I had heard, the place had gone seriously downhill and the town had become way too commercialized. Well, I don't know what these people were talking about because Byron is the best! To be completely honest with you, when I had visited all those years ago, I hadn't been all that impressed with the town and didn't know what all the fuss was about, but this time I looooved it. Must be just the right amount of commercialization for me, lol.
Apart from a couple of chain retailers and a Dominos Pizza, I didn't see too many of the big brands that would ruin a place. Plus, all the independent stores and restaurants are a million times better than any of the chains so I don't think they have anything to worry about for now. Most of my favorite Australian brands are based in Byron so it was pretty awesome to be able to go into their stores and try on the latest collections. I did a bit of damage while I was there but had prepared for it because I had been looking forward to this stop for a while.
We stayed in the Breakfree Eco Beach Resort for 4 nights and could have easily stayed longer. It's one of those towns where you feel right at home and the days pass by so quickly without any effort... But back to the resort -- it's really good for the price (around $150AUD), the rooms were huge and they had everything you need: big comfy bed, kitchen, huge bathroom, nice patio with table and chairs, good pool with bbqs and there were was a washer and dryer available as well. You could tell this place was set up for long term stay as they just supply you with the bare minimum and after that you need to buy your own shampoo, toilet paper, dish soap, etc. They also only clean rooms once every 8 days, so make sure to hang your towels back up and clean after yourself. But as long as you're not expecting to be waited on hand and foot (and aren't expecting any WIFI...), it's more than comfortable.
We spent most our days at the beach and in the water (the best swimming beaches!) but did do the lighthouse walk, which was stunning and totally worth the trek, did a bunch of shopping, and ate a ton of acai bowls.
I think my favorite thing about Byron was that the beach itself is like a walking path. Our hotel was just off the beach and about 5 minutes out of town, so we would just go down to the beach and walk to our destination this way. You see so many other people doing this as well and I swear that one out of every 10 people isn't wearing any shoes in town. Totally my kind of place.
